CHAPTER SEVEN
Selfies
Like all overused techniques, selfies get a bad rap from time to time. People accuse those who take them of being egocentric or vain. The reality is that the self-portrait is about as old as art itself. The Masters made multiple selfies back in the day, and no one seems to complain about that.
I like the practice when itâs used to mark a moment, celebrate a person, or memorialize a feeling I experienced.
Green Screen
(below) This is me and our son in front of the News Watch green screen used by the weather forecasters. We were both having a good chuckle, and I have even used this selfie as my faculty image for the Lens Collective.
Our little guy is generally very happy. He is often giggling, unless he is hungry, tired, or both. I like that his joy is evident in this image.
In on the Joke
(top) This is one of my favorite images of my daughter and me. I love the faux Fu Man Chu made out of stickers. My daughter has made multiple beards in our time together, but this one wins, hands down. I like that we tried to play it cool for the camera, though I think my smirk and slight eyebrow raise and her partial smile let the viewer in on the joke. As my daughter grows older, the sarcasm gets stronger in her, and I am sure that I will regret encouraging this comedic strain, just as my parents did.
The Whole Family
(bottom) Hereâs my family together in one image. My wife is the glue that holds us together and gets us out on adventures from time to time. This group portrait was made right before dinner at the lodge at Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas. We had just enjoyed a rainy hike down into the gorge to see an amazing waterfall. This may be our seasonâs greeting card image unless we find something better by the end of the year.
